Mean Green Smoothie

I cannot take credit for this, my good friend Shirlee Williams of Buddha Rider introduced me to this smoothie and it’s become a part of my daily routine.

I use this smoothie before long rides and big workouts, as a mid-morning or afternoon snack or as a recovery drink. Depends on what activities I’ve planned for the day and how hungry I get!

Here’s my current favourite smoothie…


1/2 banana

handful of spinach

1/2-full scoop protein powder (my preference is the Sun Warrior Vanilla – thank you Marni and Shirlee!)

1/2-3/4 cup vanilla rice or almond milk (I have a soy intolerance but feel free to substitute for soy milk)

3-4 ice cubes (crushed ice if using the bullet or similar blender)

1/2 cup water (as much as you like, depends on how thick you want your smoothie to be).

Combine all the ingredients in your blender. Mix until the spinach has been minced (your drink will be a mint green colour). I do not even notice the taste of the spinach, the banana seems to take over the flavour.

Today I’m going to substitute half of the spinach for kale. I’ll keep you posted on how it tastes!

Total Calories~139 kCal. 34.6g Carb. 2.5g Fat(og Sat). 18.6g Protein. And as a bonus 25% of your daily iron requirements (based on 1/2 scoop protein powder and 1/2 cup almond milk).
